Kevin Hopkinson, service desk technician at Ambion
At Ambion, we’re proud to be part of the UK’s heating industry. Our team is helping lead the way with infrared heat panels, a low-carbon technology that’s helping UK homes meet their decarbonisation goals, while keeping residents warm and comfortable.
In this new series, Life at Ambion, we’ll be meeting those involved with making the future of low-carbon heating happen.
In this first edition, please give a warm welcome to service desk technician Kevin Hopkinson, one of our longest-serving colleagues.
How long have you been with Ambion?
I’m happy to say I’ve been with Ambion Heating for almost ten years. Prior to this, I had a career in the printing industry, which spanned nearly 30 years.
I’ve always had an interest in technology and innovation, so when I heard there was an opportunity to work for Ambion Heating, I jumped at the chance.
How has your role changed during this time?
I initially joined Ambion Heating as an assembly technician, and my main duties included configuring and assembling Ambion’s low carbon heat panels. As the business grew, I was promoted to service desk technician within a few years.
What are your main responsibilities as a service desk technician?
My main duties include registering any returns and carrying out diagnostics for Ambion’s low carbon heat panels and their control panels. This encompasses calibrating and testing components, re-coding control panels and printed circuit boards, as well as any other work required in the Ambion factory.
As a service desk technician, my role also often involves liaising with other departments, such as the sales and technical support teams, engineers, suppliers and couriers.
What do you find the most rewarding aspect of your role?
For me, the most rewarding part is seeing Ambion develop and grow. I really enjoy my role, and find it particularly satisfying knowing that what I do contributes to the company’s success. It’s fulfilling knowing our system not only keeps customers warm and comfortable, while reducing condensation and damp, but also helps dramatically lower their energy bills. This is especially important in social housing settings, where fuel poverty can be a real cause for concern.
Having worked with most of my team for several years at this point, I can honestly say there’s a real camaraderie between us all. Everyone plays their part in making sure Ambion’s systems are top quality.
What hobbies and interests do you enjoy outside of work?
Music is my passion. Most weekends I play lead guitar with one of the top cover bands in Leeds. We play an eclectic mix of rock songs, covering everything from the Arctic Monkeys to ZZ Top. I’ve been playing with the band for almost 23 years, at venues ranging from pubs to festivals that host up to 4,000 people.
