Independent study reports major energy saving potential of Ambion’s Low Carbon Heat Panels

An independent study by the widely respected engineering consultancy, Fichtner Consulting Engineers, has revealed the significant energy savings that can be achieved by installing Ambion’s Low Carbon Heat Panels when compared to traditional heating systems.

The study into the effectiveness of Ambion’s Low Carbon Heat Panels showed a weighted average Performance Ratio of 2.69 – which equates to a 63% energy saving compared with typical conventional convection systems.

This Performance Ratio is particularly high for smaller properties with limited space, such as terraced houses and flats, at 2.91 (66% energy saving) and 5.07 (89% energy saving) respectively.

The report was based on Fichtner’s analysis of 100 house-years of real operational data from across Ambion’s customer portfolio.

Fichtner then compared these Performance Ratios with those expected for standard electric convection heaters and air source heat pumps (ASHPs). The analysis showed that in over 90% of households, Ambion Low Carbon Heat Panels produced a Performance Ratio greater than that expected of a standard electric convection heater.

In addition, in 45% of terraced houses and 67% of flats, Ambion Low Carbon Heat Panels produced a Performance Ratio greater than that of ASHPs.

This comes at a time when both energy price volatility and rapidly approaching decarbonisation deadlines are of great concern to homeowners, landlords, developers, architects and contractors, as Oliver Baker, CEO at Ambion Heating, comments:

“Fichtner’s study confirms the significant energy saving, and therefore carbon-reduction, potential of our Low Carbon Heat Panels. They enable landlords, developers and building owners to meet their decarbonisation objectives, while keeping end-users warm, comfortable, and out of fuel poverty.

“The compelling results for terraced properties and flats also show that we provide the best low-carbon heating system for smaller homes and multi-occupancy buildings – whether it’s a retrofit project, new build, or modular construction – and this report illustrates that in real terms.

“With a growing requirement to replace fossil-fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives, this should be particularly appealing to housebuilders, landlords and developers seeking a high-performance and cost-effective heating solution.”

Ambion Low Carbon Heat Panels work by using a unique control system, which uses dynamic pulsing in place of the standard zoning on/off approach, dramatically reducing energy usage and maintaining room temperature within 0.1°C of its target, 24 hours a day.

Infrared heat panels are then used in place of standard convection heating, allowing building materials and objects in the room to absorb and store infrared heat, releasing it between pulses, making it the perfect partner for the pulsing approach.

Georgina Ross, Project Engineer at Fichtner Consulting Engineers, added, “Our team was engaged by Ambion to carry out a study to determine the Performance Ratio of Ambion’s Low Carbon Heat Panel systems. Analysing data from a number of households, the Performance Ratio compared the actual electricity consumption of each household against the EPC predicted annual space heating demand.

“The study found that, in almost all cases reviewed, Ambion’s heating panels achieved performance ratios above that of conventional heaters. We are extremely pleased to be working with Ambion on this exciting new low carbon technology, especially at a time where energy efficiencies and decarbonisation have never been so prevalent. We are excited to see how this technology continues to grow and look forward to working together again in the future.”
